If one happens to visit hill city of Shimla, would invariably comes familiar to the surname such as Panta, Kalta, Bamta, Sapta and so on.
People of Shimla, Solan, Sirmour, Kullu and some parts of Mandi district, which were previously named as Shimla hill states, existed before formation of Himachal Pradesh, carry such surnames which ends with 'Ta'.
(Kindly do mention the place of residence or any reference with surname)
Ancestors, native places where the family or 'biradari' belongs is associated to their their surname with ending letters TA, says experts. That is why former hill states are is often called (informally) as Ta-Pradesh or Khadustan (informal; meaning places where people bring up khadu-male sheep).
Though newcomers find it very difficult to decipherer, how many names can end with Ta. But in former Shimla hill states it is not only ...Ta, ...Tu/Too, ...aN, ...aL also exists in scores of surnames.
Interestingly one surname ending with Ta, not included in the elusive list, (with smiles:on which even experts are not sure how they took from this gorgeous place,) is Tata.

To start at least, I wish to present this list, which would urge readers to comment with any addition or change or editing in the list.

Tanata,Dipka and a few others may add to the list.
ReplyDeleteActually as I have analyzed these surnames having suffix TA belonging to Jubbal and kotkhai and some places from Rohru. Chohhara block and most parts of Rohru does not refer to these suffixes. They use some different words although the basic logic of honoring their ancestry is same.
ReplyDeleteYou are still missing more than a dozen
ReplyDelete. You can add 'tanta' to your list
ITS KHIMTA NOT KAMTA THEY BOTH ARE DIFFERENT ..>The Kamta family name was found in the USA in 1920. In 1920 there was 1 Kamta family living in Montana. This was 100% of all the recorded Kamta's in USA.
